Davante Adams Trade Rumors: Jets to Maintain Pursuit of Raiders WR amid Saleh Firing

Adam WellsOct 8, 2024

As Las Vegas Raiders star Davante Adams continues to wait for a resolution to his trade request, the New York Jets' decision to fire Robert Saleh reportedly won't impact their pursuit of the veteran wide receiver.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the Jets still "want" Adams as much as he wants to play for them, and the Raiders will continue to have talks with New York and other clubs to find a trade package that works for all parties.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets fired Saleh on Tuesday after a 2-3 start this season. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will take over as interim head coach, per NFL Network's Peter Schrager.

There's no reason why Saleh's firing should impact their interest in Adams. The Jets have to be all-in right now because Aaron Rodgers is their quarterback and is closer to the end of his career with his 41st birthday coming on Dec. 2.

Schefter reported last week that the Jets and New Orleans Saints were at or near the top of Adams' wish list of trade destinations because he would prefer to play with a quarterback he knows.

Adams and Rodgers spent eight seasons playing together with the Green Bay Packers from 2014 to 2021. Adams and Saints quarterback Derek Carr were teammates for three seasons at Fresno State from 2011 to '13 and played together with the Raiders during the 2022 campaign.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that the Saints have "been the most aggressive suitor" for Adams thus far, with trade talks expected to accelerate early this week as he gets closer to being healthy after missing the past two games with a hamstring injury.

According to Schultz, the Raiders' asking price for Adams is a second-round draft pick and an additional pick, but the sense is that no team has come close to meeting that demand.

Adams' contract wouldn't seem to be a huge hindrance to finalizing a deal. He has a $16.9 million base salary this year and salaries of $35.6 million in each of the next two years, but none of his money after 2024 is guaranteed.

The Raiders could take on some of Adams' remaining salary to facilitate a trade and potentially get a lucrative return, but there's no indication at this point they want to go that route.

New York could make a deal right now without having to adjust any money since it has $16.8 million in cap space. The Saints would either need to adjust some contracts currently on their roster or convince the Raiders to pay some of Adams' salary since they only have $3.9 million in cap room.

Despite having a healthy Rodgers so far this season, the Gang Green offense hasn't been significantly better than it was with Zach Wilson in 2023. The Jets' 93 points through five games is the same amount they had after five games last year.

Rodgers threw three interceptions in Sunday's 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. It was just his second game with at least three interceptions since the start of the 2018 season.

The Jets (2-3) are only one game behind the Buffalo Bills for first place in the AFC East. Those two teams will play in Week 6 on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium.
