During an appearance on It Is What It Is, Irvin revealed that he initially was stretching his back while the Hurricanes were trailing the Golden Bears, but he chose to stay on the ground while they mounted their comeback out of superstition:
Irvin's choice to stay in place despite the compromising position turned out to be a good luck charm for Miami, as the team overcame a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter to earn a 39-38 win and improve to 6-0 for the first time since 2017.
The 58-year-old took credit for his part in the Hurricanes' comeback victory.
"And it worked! Yeah, I bent that thang over, but we got that win," Irvin said. "Whatever it takes."
When asked if we can expect to see him in that position again if it helps Miami get a win, Irvin let out a hearty laugh before saying, "Nah, man. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna try to keep an ice pack or some kind of heat pack. I'm gonna refrain from that position anymore in the future."
The No. 6 Hurricanes will be back in action on Saturday against Louisville, so Irvin will surely be hoping that game will be easier to watch and won't require him to tap into any other superstitions.
