Terry McLaurin 'Didn't Anticipate' Jayden Daniels Being so Successful as a Rookie QB
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has exceeded expectations to begin his rookie season, including those from his own teammates.
Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin discussed Daniels' hot start with Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer following a 34-13 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
"I didn't anticipate him coming in and hitting the ground running like that," McLaurin said. "I've played with a few quarterbacks and definitely a few rookie quarterbacks. Sometimes it takes some time to get comfortable in the NFL system, not just at practice. Then you go to a game and it's a different animal. What's always encouraged me about him is his ability to get better every day in practice."

"When he would have a so-so practice, the next day he would not be making the same mistakes twice," he added.
Washington selected Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft after winning the 2023 Heisman Trophy following his senior season at LSU. The 23-year-old stood out throughout training camp and was named the Commanders' starter on Aug. 19.
"Same thing in joint practice," McLaurin said. "Then you get in the game, you see him getting better each and every week. I think that's a testament to his experience that he had in college, but also the preparation he puts in. That dude works so hard. He's always prepared."
Daniels' accuracy has been superb to start his career, as his 77.1 completion percentage is the highest among all starting quarterbacks. He set a single-game rookie completion percentage record during Washington's Week 3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, connecting on 91.3 percent of his throws.
He's also racked up 1,135 yards through the air and four passing touchdowns against two interceptions. Daniels has showcased his dual-threat capabilities, recording another 300 yards and four more scores on the ground.
McLaurin has been his top target, hauling in 23 catches for 303 yards and two touchdowns.
Daniels has led the Commanders to a 4-1 start through five games, good enough for the No. 1 spot in the NFC East.
