Francisco Lindor, Mets Stun MLB Fans with Late Rally to Beat Phillies in NLDS Game 1

Zach BacharOct 5, 2024

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies with an eighth-inning rally on Saturday, taking the first game of the National League Division Series by the final score of 6-2.

After recording just one hit against Phillies starter Zack Wheeler through seven innings and trailing 1-0, New York's offense exploded once he exited the game. The Mets racked up five of their six runs in the eighth.

Francisco Lindor wasn't able to record a hit, but he walked twice and scored the go-ahead run for New York off an RBI single by Brandon Nimmo.

Fans and pundits were amazed by the Mets' ability to continue producing runs late in close games.

Kodai Senga took the mound to open the game for New York in his first appearance since July 26, as he missed multiple months due to a calf strain. Senga allowed a leadoff home run to Kyle Schwarber, but he struck out three batters and didn't give up another hit in two innings of work.

Nimmo and third baseman Mark Vientos led New York's offense, combining for four hits and three RBI.

Schwarber paced the Phillies with two hits of his own, but the team's bullpen struggles were too much for the lineup to overcome.

Philadelphia will attempt to even the series in Game 2 on Sunday at 4:08 p.m. ET.
