Tim Tebow: 3 Unexpected Similarities in Pop Culture

Todd McElweeMay 31, 2018

Tim Tebow may take his final snap of the season this Sunday in the AFC Divisional playoffs against Pittsburgh.

Denver’s much-ballyhooed and equaled maligned signal caller has at times looked like a million bucks, but lately has watched his value fall faster than one of his wobbly downfield attempts.

At the moment, Tebow looks like fool’s gold, but he isn’t alone. As a society we sometimes overvalue objects and individuals only to find out all that glitters is not gold.

Here’s three examples, which ironically is the number of downs Tebow will likely be playing during most series Sunday.

Ryan Reynolds

Some had pegged everyone’s favorite Canadian pretty boy as a leading man. Unfortunately he isn’t.

People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2010 is always good for a crude laugh (Van Wilder, Adventureland) and plays the love interest well, (The Proposal, Definitely, Maybe) but just can’t carry a picture by himself (Green Lantern).

Like Tebow, he’s a good supporting piece, but shouldn’t be the star of the show.

Fourth Generation Ford Mustang GT (1994-1998)

Back when I was in high school—before The Fast and the Furious inspired love affair with tuner cars took hold—this was the car you wanted.

The Mustang GT had the legendary 5.0 V-8 under the hood (later a 4.6 variant), a booming stereo and the pedigree of being a fast car capable of getting even faster girls.

However, the Mustang, like the girls who probably frequented its backseat, wasn’t worth the sticker price. The V-8 was loud, but honestly not that fast. With only 215 horsepower pushing the rear wheels, it achieved 0-60 times in a mediocre 6 seconds and change, and a quarter mile in roughly 15 seconds.

That’s a Tebow-like level of performance.

Coldplay

Chris Martin and company were an unstoppable hit machine early in their career, producing such radio-friendly ditties such as "Yellow," "Clocks" and "The Scientist."

They’d gotten off to a 7-1 start, but like everyone’s favorite former Gator, their star doesn’t shine as brightly as it once did.
