NFL Trade Rumors: Davante Adams' Contract an Issue; Teams Want Raiders to Eat Salary

Doric SamOct 5, 2024

The Las Vegas Raiders have made star receiver Davante Adams available for a trade, but a potential hurdle remains before the team can get a deal done.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler explained on Saturday's episode of SportsCenter that Adams' sizeable remaining salary for the 2024 campaign could cause other teams to request that the Raiders eat some of that money before agreeing to acquire him.

"The big key here is the nearly $17 million in salary all guaranteed," Fowler said. "That's nearly $1 million a week, most teams do not budget for that in Week 5, Week 6 of the season. So, they're contemplating how much will the Raiders cover that salary to facilitate a trade."

"Teams like the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs are monitoring the situation and willing to jump in if the Raiders are willing to pay some of Adams' contract. They see him as a one-year rental," according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier this week that the Raiders would "consider" trading Adams for a package that would include a second-round pick plus additional compensation. The New York Jets and New Orleans Saints were identified as potential suitors, as Adams would be interested in a reunion with quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr, respectively. Fowler also named the Washington Commanders as a "sleeper" team on Saturday.

Adams has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos. Still, Fowler noted that negotiations between Las Vegas and other teams "could heat up as early as next week because it seems pretty clear that Davante Adams has played his last game as a Raider."
