Derek Carr: I 'Would Welcome' Reunion with Davante Adams on Saints amid Trade Rumors

Timothy RappOct 3, 2024

As Davante Adams trade rumors continue to swirl, one of his former teammates would be more than happy to be reunited with the talented wideouts.

"I think all 32 quarterbacks would love to play with Davante. We would welcome that," New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr told reporters on Thursday. "I don't know if I can get in trouble for saying that. I just think everyone kind of knows that... I think everyone would love to play with Tay. I would obviously welcome playing with him again if that ever worked out in our careers."

Carr and Adams, of course, were both college teammates at Fresno State for two seasons (2012-13) and in the NFL for the Las Vegas Raiders (2022).

The pairing was fruitful in their lone NFL season together—Adams caught 100 passes for 1,516 yards and 14 touchdowns. But Carr was released by the Raiders the following offseason, as the team looked to avoid paying him $40.4 million in guaranteed future money, and he signed with the Saints ahead of the 2023 campaign.

Adams hasn't seemed particularly thrilled to be in Las Vegas since, seemingly displeased with the quarterback play last season, among other potential factors. He was reportedly on the trading block ahead of the in-season deadline last year, though no trades came to fruition

Up until this point, Adams has pushed back against any insinuation that he might be unhappy in Las Vegas. But with reports emerging earlier in the week that he requested a trade—and that the Raiders would field calls and consider moving him—his time in Las Vegas appears to be over.

The Saints would obviously benefit from pairing him with Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, giving Carr an excellent trio at wideout to go along with star running back Alvin Kamara. But that would require some contract restructuring from Adams and clever bookkeeping from the Saints, as the team doesn't currently have the cap space to absorb his contract.

So it may be a long shot, at least for now, that Adams and Carr will be reunited. But you can't blame the veteran quarterback for being more than open to the possibility.
