Jets OC Hackett Dodges Question on Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers amid Trade Rumors

Mike ChiariOct 3, 2024

New York Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett declined to answer a question Thursday about the possibility of acquiring Las Vegas Raiders superstar wide receiver Davante Adams.

According to NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman, a reporter asked Hackett if the Jets could benefit from "a veteran wide receiver with familiarity with your quarterback and system," but rather than answering, Hackett shifted the focus toward Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings in London.

"Oh, right now, I'm looking forward to getting over to London," Hackett said. "We hop on a flight in a couple of hours. That's all I've been thinking about."

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Raiders are open to trading Adams, and if they do, the Jets and New Orleans Saints are high on his wish list.

That is likely because Adams previously played with Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers as members of the Green Bay Packers and with Saints quarterback Derek Carr as members of the Raiders and previously at Fresno State in college.

Hackett was the Packers' OC from 2019 to 2021, which coincided with an incredible run of success for both Rodgers and Adams.

Rodgers averaged 4,139 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and just four interceptions per season during that stretch, and he won the NFL MVP Award in both 2020 and 2021.

Adams was his No. 1 target throughout that three-year run, and his numbers especially flourished during Rodgers' MVP campaigns.

In 2020, Adams finished with 115 receptions for 1,374 yards and a career-high 18 touchdowns, which led the league. He followed that up with a career-high 123 grabs for 1,553 yards, along with 11 touchdowns in 2021.

The Packers traded Adams to the Raiders at the conclusion of the 2021 season, while Hackett accepted the Denver Broncos' head coaching job. That left Rodgers to have a sub-par 2022 season by his standards, and it resulted in him getting traded to the Jets prior to the 2023 campaign.

Rodgers missed essentially all of 2023 with a torn Achilles suffered during the Jets' first game, and he is now trying to find his footing in New York.

His numbers look solid, as he has thrown for 849 yards, five touchdowns and one pick, but the Jets are just 2-2, and Garrett Wilson is not emerging as the true No. 1 wideout he was expecting to be when the Jets selected him 10th overall in 2022.

Adams would give Rodgers another familiar target to go along with Allen Lazard, plus he would conceivably open things up for Wilson even more.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Adams wants to be traded and his preferred landing spot is with the Jets, but he is also open to other possibilities.

Rapoport noted that the Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are among the teams that have either inquired about Adams or that Adams would be happy to join.

The Jets undoubtedly present Adams with the most comfortable situation since he had success with Hackett and Rodgers in the past, but the six-time Pro Bowler's contract and the Jets' asking price will be points of consideration for the Jets or any other team that may want to acquire him.
