Video: Kevin Durant Says He's Not Focused on Possible Suns Contract Extension

Zach BacharSep 30, 2024

Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant isn't focused on a new contract extension ahead of the 2024-25 season.

"I have two years left on my contract," Durant told reporters on Monday. "I'm focused on being the best I can every day in the moment. We'll figure that stuff out when it's time."

The 36-year-old has a $51.1 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season and a $54.7 million cap hit for his 2025-26 campaign before he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the 2026 offseason (per Spotrac).

Durant is eligible for a one-year extension worth $59.7 million that would keep him under contract through the 2026-27 season, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks (h/t Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic).

Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein confirmed that the front office was discussing an extension with Durant while he was participating in the Paris Olympics.

"He's focused on the Olympics, but we're always having dialogue," Bartelstein said on July 31, per Rankin. "The relationship is what matters the most. The relationship is in a great spot. I talk to [Durant's agent] Rich Kleiman, who works with Kevin, all the time. Conversations are great not just on extension stuff, but on all things that have been going on."

Team governor Mat Ishbia echoed a similar sentiment on Monday.

"Kevin Durant loves it here, and we love Kevin....we don't really go through contract extensions publicly," Ishbia said, via Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports.

Durant has remained one of the NBA's most efficient volume scorers since he was acquired by Phoenix in a Feb. 2023 blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets.

In 75 starts last season, the 14-time All-Star averaged 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game on 52.3/41.3/85.6 shooting splits.

The Suns will be looking to bounce back from a disheartening first-round sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves last season with Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal returning for their second year as a trio.
