Oregon Ducks Helmet: Absurd Auction Cost Will Keep OU's Uniforms Changing

Michael DixonJun 3, 2018

Oregon's football program already has more uniform combinations than any normal human being can already count. Given some new information, don't look for the amount combinations to be going down any time soon.

According to Lost Lettermen, a helmet used by an Oregon Duck in a Rose Bowl practice in on sale at Ebay for a cool $1,225. If anyone out there has wondered why places like Oregon have so many different uniforms, this is all the information that you will ever need.

Granted, this is not being sold by Oregon and it's a used helmet, but that's an absurd amount of money to spend on a helmet that was worn in practice. Absurd? Maybe. But just because it's absurd doesn't mean that people won't constantly put up money.

As long as Oregon is changing its uniforms and helmets, there will be an element of intrigue to every different jersey, pair of pants or helmet. Not everything will go for over $1,000, but it doesn't need to. These are things that the Ducks can (and do) market to their fans.

Anyone even slightly familiar with the capitalist mindset, or who likes making the occasional extra dollar or two, can see this and continue to make money.

Here's the problem, and it's not a small one: The players can see it too. If a player gives his jersey (or helmet) to a person, or said person stumbles across it, there are no problems. If that person sells it (as is the case here), there are no problems.

But if a player tries to avoid the middleman and sells it on his own, there are huge problems. There are also problems if there is a middleman, but the player whose equipment is being sold gets so much as a dime from it, there's a big problem for the player and potentially the school.

But none of that is going to deter any of this from happening. Oregon (and any other school) will see this and try to take advantage of it more than they already do. They'll trust the players to not do anything illegally, because doing so makes the school a lot of money.

The more concrete proof we have that these kinds of things will bring in more money, the more it's going to happen.
