Former NFL QB Tommy Kramer Says He Has Been Diagnosed With Dementia

Minnesota Vikings legend Tommy Kramer revealed he was diagnosed with dementia more than one year ago.

Kramer announced the news in a post on X, saying doctors at the Cleveland Clinic diagnosed him with the cognitive disorder in 2023:

The statement did note the disease had not progressed when Kramer went in for his yearly check-up recently.

Kramer explained he felt compelled to share his diagnosis after Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre revealed on Tuesday he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

A first-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 1977, Kramer played 14 seasons in the NFL. He spent the first 13 years of his career with the Vikings, starting 110 games from 1977 to '89.

Kramer's most famous moment for the Vikings was in Week 15 of the 1980 season. He capped off a 14-point fourth-quarter comeback with a 46-yard Hail Mary to Ahmad Rashad as time expired for a 28-23 win over the Cleveland Browns to clinch the NFC Central title.

The New Orleans Saints signed Kramer as a free agent prior to the 1990 season. He appeared in one game before retiring at the end of the year.

Kramer was named one of the 50 greatest Vikings players of all time during the franchise's anniversary celebration in 2021. He ranks second in franchise history with 24,775 passing yards and third with 159 touchdown passes.
