NBA Rumors: Kevin Knox, Warriors Agree to Contract Ahead of 2024-25 Season

Julia StumbaughSep 25, 2024

Free agent forward Kevin Knox is heading to the Golden State Warriors on a one-year deal, Shams Charania reported on Wednesday for The Athletic.

Knox is expected to compete for a roster spot in training camp, Charania noted.

Knox, who is heading into his seventh NBA campaign, averaged 7.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in 31 appearances for the Detroit Pistons last season.

He played 18.1 points per night for the Pistons, shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the arc.

Knox earned a spot in Golden State's training camp after impressing in blue and yellow during four Summer League appearances with 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

The forward showed off his offense during a Summer League semifinals loss to the Miami Heat's summer squad by leading the Warriors with 31 points and 11 rebounds.

It looks like that performance helped encourage the Warriors to give the 6-foot-7 forward a shot at a regular-season roster spot.

A No. 9 pick in the 2018 draft by the New York Knicks out of Kentucky, Knox spent the majority of his rookie campaign as a starter before moving to the Knicks' reserves for the next two seasons.

The Knicks traded the forward to the Atlanta Hawks midway through the 2022-23 season, after which Knox signed with the Detroit Pistons.

Knox was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in February 2023, then was waived by the team that October. He re-signed with the Pistons only to be the subject of another trade-and-waive to the Utah Jazz in February, since when he has been an unrestricted free agent.

The forward will now join Warriors training camp with 306 regular-season appearances and 77 starts under his belt, with career averages of 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per night.

The Warriors are looking to recover from a disappointing season that resulted in missing the playoffs last season, as well as the offseason loss of Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks.

This offseason the Warriors signed free agents Buddy Hield, De'Anthony Melton and Kyle Anderson in an effort to reenergize the roster around Steph Curry.

Knox likely won't move the needle on the Warriors' hopes of making the postseason as much as the bench additions of Hield, Melton or Anderson, especially given his struggles from behind the arc in Detroit. But if he can impress in camp, Knox could still help the Warriors build on their wing reserves as the Warriors look to return with a deeper roster this fall.
