NFL Rumors: Steelers' Najee Harris 'Expected to be Fine' Amid Arm Injury; Warren TBD

Mike ChiariSep 24, 2024

Despite suffering an apparent arm injury during the Pittsburgh Steelers' Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, running back Najee Harris is reportedly not expected to miss any time.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Harris is "expected to be fine" and will "likely" play in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts even though he was seen in the locker room with his right arm in a sling after Sunday's victory.

Fellow running back Jaylen Warren might have a tougher time seeing the field, however, with Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette calling him "week-to-week" with a knee injury.

Mike Tomlin clarified Warren's injury was not related to his previous hamstring issue.

"He was limping in-game and the latter part of the game, I kind of noticed it and I pulled him from the game because I know Jaylen's tough, he's just gonna go," the coach told reporters. "And so we'll see where his availability is as we work this week. I'd imagine he's gonna be somewhat limited tomorrow and we'll see the trajectory of it in terms of including him, or no, in planning."

Harris did not noticeably miss any time due to injury during the Steelers' 20-10 home win against the Chargers on Sunday, as he carried the ball 18 times for 70 yards and made five catches for 16 yards.

Although he is averaging just 3.8 yards per carry, Harris has been the go-to guy for the Steelers offensively, carrying the ball at least 17 times in each of Pittsburgh's first three games.

Harris has rushed for 209 yards and no touchdowns on the year, while also reeling in seven passes for another 30 yards.

Originally selected 24th overall by the Steelers in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, the former Alabama standout topped the 1,000-yard rushing mark in each of his first three seasons and was named a Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2021.

Harris also caught 74 passes for 467 yards and scored 10 total touchdowns in addition to his 1,200 rushing yards that season.

He has not been able to replicate those numbers since then, finishing with 1,034 rushing yards, 41 catches for 229 yards and 10 total touchdowns in 2022, and rushing for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with 29 receptions for 170 yards last season.

Last season was the best of Harris' career in terms of efficiency, as he averaged a career-high 4.1 yards per carry, but his 3.9 yards per carry for his career is considered a mediocre number.

Even so, Tomlin has continued to lean on Harris, and it has paid dividends this season, as the Steelers are 3-0.

Pittsburgh has had a run-heavy offense with Justin Fields at quarterback, and although the Steelers rank only 24th in the NFL in both total offense and scoring offense, they have remained unbeaten.

That has largely been thanks to a dominant defense that is first in total defense and scoring defense, but Harris has been huge in terms of helping the Steelers maintain possession and chew clock.

While all signs point toward Harris being good to go Sunday, things are less certain for Warren. Tomlin said he is currently questionable for Week 4 until he sees if the versatile running back can practice this week.

Warren has just 82 total yards in three games this season, but he was a huge part of the offense in 2023, totaling 1,154 yards from scrimmage and catching 61 passes.

If Warren cannot play against the Colts, veteran Cordarrelle Patterson will be in line to serve as Harris' backup.
