Cowboys' Stephen Jones: McCarthy Can 'Absolutely' Guide Team Through 'Growing Pains'

Amid the Dallas Cowboys' 1-2 start, it sounds like head coach Mike McCarthy doesn't have to worry about his job security just yet.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones was asked during an appearance on The K&C Masterpiece on Audacy's 105.3 The Fan if McCarthy is the right person to lead the team through what he described as "growing pains," and Jones answered affirmatively.

"Absolutely, that's why we hired Mike in the first place," Jones said around the 2:50 mark. "He's got a resume that shows that he gets the job done as a head coach. Mike's coached championship-caliber teams, he's won Super Bowls, he's been in several championship games, and we feel like he can get the job done for us."

Questions arose surrounding McCarthy's effectiveness as Dallas' head coach after the team was upset in the NFC Wild Card Round last year. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in January that the team is committed to moving forward with McCarthy.

Unfortunately, the 2024 season has not started as planned. Dallas suffered a 28-25 loss to the Baltimore Ravens this weekend, and it needed a 19-point fourth quarter to make the game end with a respectable score. The Cowboys have struggled with the run game on both sides of the ball and that continued on Sunday, as they allowed 274 rushing yards to the Ravens while totaling just 51 yards on the ground.

McCarthy will have to work quickly to figure out a winning formula for Dallas, as the team will return to action on Thursday Night Football in an NFC East matchup against the New York Giants.
