Patrick Mahomes Takes Blame for Chiefs' Play: 'Feel Like I Haven't Played Very Well'

Zach BacharSep 23, 2024

Patrick Mahomes isn't satisfied with his performances throughout the Kansas City Chiefs' first three weeks of the season.

"I feel like I haven't played very well and that's not a stats thing," Mahomes told reporters on Sunday (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk). "I just feel like I'm missing opportunities whenever they're out there and not throwing the ball in the exact spot I want it to be at. It's about me getting back to my fundamentals, putting our guys in the right position, and then we've got to execute at a higher level offensively."

"If teams are going to make us drive the field, we have to prove that we're able to do that, and I'm sure we'll get a lot of the same this next week with the Chargers," he added.

The Chiefs defeated the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football, moving to 3-0 on the season as a whole. However, Mahomes' individual start to the year has fallen below expectations.

The two-time MVP is averaging just 219.7 passing yards per game, which would represent a career-low mark over the course of a full season. He's also thrown five touchdowns compared to four interceptions, getting picked off three times over Kansas City's past two games.

The Chiefs' average of 328 total yards per game ranks No. 13 among all NFL teams, a relatively low number for a squad that is searching for a third consecutive Super Bowl victory.

Still, Kansas City sits atop the AFC West after three games and appears poised to challenge for the team's ninth consecutive division title.

Mahomes will face another challenge as the Chiefs take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4. Although Justin Herbert's availability is uncertain after aggravating an ankle injury on Sunday, Los Angeles has still started the season 2-1 under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

After three weeks, the Chargers own the NFL's ninth-best pass defense.
