Waiver Wire Week 4: Jauan Jennings, Justin Fields, Andy Dalton and Pickups to Know

Joe TanseySep 23, 2024

Jauan Jennings carried the San Francisco 49ers offense in Week 3.

He could do the same exact thing in the coming weeks for the 49ers, and for fantasy football players who pick him up off the waiver wire, because of all the injuries inside the San Francisco offense.

San Francisco did not have Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel or George Kittle on the field for Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Jennings should be the first player in many waiver-wire queues ahead of Week 4. He will be followed by Justin Fields and Andy Dalton on the list of must-have pickups.

Fields turned in yet another solid showing for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, while Dalton proved the Carolina Panthers offense can look competent in his first start of the season.

Jauan Jennings exploded on to fantasy football radars with his 11-catch, 175-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Rams.

Jennings was one of two viable pass-catching targets in the 49ers offense in Week 3 alongside Brandon Aiyuk.

The same situation may be in play for the next few weeks, which makes Jennings such an intriguing waiver-wire pickup.

Christian McCaffrey is on injured reserve, Deebo Samuel is expected to miss a few weeks and George Kittle is dealing with a hamstring issue that kept him out of Sunday's game.

Jennings should get another large target share in Week 4 against the New England Patriots.

The next two games, both at home against New England and the Arizona Cardinals, could be opportunities for Jennings to feast while the stars of the 49ers offense get healthier.

Justin Fields

Justin Fields had his best performance in a Pittsburgh uniform on Sunday.

The former Chicago Bears quarterback threw for 245 yards and completed 78.1 percent of his passes against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The passing performance was a big upgrade from the sub-160-yard showings he put up in the first two weeks.

Fields did not run as much in Week 3 as he did in the first two weeks, but he more than made up for that with his arm.

Fields' run up to Pittsburgh's Week 9 bye is fairly easy with both New York teams, Indianapolis, Las Vegas and Dallas on the schedule.

His fantasy football ceiling is a week-by-week replacement for quarterbacks on bye weeks, or in tough matchups.

Fields is at least in the middle tier of fantasy quarterbacks, which should be enough to convince some fantasy football players to pick him up as their backup.

Andy Dalton

Andy Dalton upgraded the Carolina Panthers offense in his first start in place of Bryce Young.

The veteran signal-caller threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns in the win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Dalton displayed immediate chemistry with Diontae Johnson and he got a handful of other pass-catchers involved for Dave Canales' team.

All of a sudden, Carolina has a competent offense and Dalton looks like a solid fantasy football backup quarterback.

No one will tell you Dalton is clear-cut starting quarterback in fantasy football circles, but with bye weeks beginning in Week 5, it's a smart idea to pick him up now in order to be prepared for the first round of byes.
