Video: Trevor Lawrence Talks Jaguars Offense After Browns Loss; 'We Suck Right Now'

Timothy RappSep 15, 2024

Trevor Lawrence isn't pleased with the Jacksonville Jaguars' 0-2 start to the 2024 NFL season.

"We suck right now," he told reporters when asked to assess the team's offense following an 18-13 loss against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. "I'm pretty shocked. Obviously we had a great offseason, great training camp, and we've got to figure it out. We've got a good group, we've got good players, so we can be a really good offense, but clearly we're not. Everybody's got to take accountability, look in the mirror and fix it. I've got to play better, the leader of this offense, it's on me."

Jacksonville's offense started the season off well enough, with 17 first-half points against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. But since then, the Jags have been held to just 13 points in six quarters.

The passing game in particular struggled on Sunday, as Lawrence finished just 14-of-30 for 220 yards without a touchdown or interception, taking four sacks and seven quarterback hits overall. He's now taken seven sacks on the year with just one passing score.

The defense, meanwhile, is giving up an average of just 19 points per game and held Cleveland to 297 yards of total offense. It wasn't enough given the offense's struggles, however.

"We've gotta take charge. We're standing around, waiting for someone to make a play," Lawrence noted. "Defense is playing their asses off. The last two weeks, if a team doesn't score more than 20 points on us, we should win every week. Couldn't finish in the red zone today, too many mistakes, coming in and out of the huddle communication wasn't good. It was a lot of things."

Head coach Doug Pederson had a more concise take on the situation.

"Right now, we've just got to stop kind of the nonsense that we're creating for ourselves," he said on the CBS broadcast at halftime.

But the nonsense persisted, including his team taking a safety with less than two minutes remaining, all but snuffing out the comeback attempt (though the Jags would ultimately get an unsuccessful Hail Mary attempt to end the game).

Now, Jacksonville finds itself needing to climb out of an 0-2 hole. If the offense doesn't improve, and quickly, that hole is going to grow far deeper.
