After a 6-11 season in 2023 and a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1, the Giants fell to the Washington Commanders by the final score of 21-18. Commanders kicker Austin Seibert nailed a 30-yard field goal as time expired, securing the victory.

The Giants weren't able to sustain long drives consistently, as Washington possessed the ball for over 37 minutes of game time. New York only ran 51 plays on offense compared to 69 for the Commanders.

Daboll's team also experienced special teams issues, as kicker Graham Gano exited the game after the opening kickoff due to an injury. Gano was added to the team's injury report on Saturday with a groin issue, but he ended up starting the game (via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post).

The Giants initially turned to punter Jamie Gillian, but the plan was abandoned after he missed an extra point in the first quarter. New York was forced to attempt two-point conversions without a kicker, leaving points on the board.

With the score tied at 18 and just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Giants were able to drive down to Washington's 22-yard line. New York wasn't able to convert on third down and couldn't move the sticks on fourth down without being able to kick a go-ahead field goal.

Daboll's tenure with the Giants started off strong, winning nine games and earning a spot in the divisional round of the playoffs during his first year with the team in 2022. After losing five of their first six games to begin the 2023 season, New York is off to another rough start.
