Bam Adebayo Hypes A'ja Wilson for 'U'nanimous' WNBA MVP amid Relationship Rumors

Joseph ZuckerSep 12, 2024

Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo made his opinion clear when it comes to the WNBA MVP race.

Adebayo lobbed for the Las Vegas Aces' A'ja Wilson to be the unanimous winner as the season winds to its conclusion.

To be fair, Adebayo isn't exactly impartial. He and Wilson have been rumored to be dating for some time, and the story gained serious traction thanks to comments made by Miami-Dade County mayor Daniella Levine Cava when she gave Adebayo a symbolic key to the county.

Plenty of neutral observers share Adebayo's opinion, though.

Wilson is leading the WNBA in scoring with 27.3 points per game and she just broke the single-season record for most points.

The 28-year-old is also second in rebounds (11.9 per game) and first in blocks with 2.7 denials per contest. Few players have ever dominated at both ends of the floor like she is doing right now.

Player efficiency rating and win shares are far from definitive barometers as to a player's performance, yet it's worth noting Wilson is on pace to have the highest PER (36.0) for a season and already has the most win shares (10.4).

And while the WNBA MVP voting has historically favored players from one of the top two seeds, the Aces' fourth-place position in the standings has done little to dent Wilson's candidacy. Her consistency night in and night out is one of the biggest reasons the two-time reigning champions are still in line to host a first-round playoff series.

"I don't want it to ever get lost on how good (A'ja) is," Aces coach Becky Hammon told reporters before Wednesday's 86-75 win over the Indiana Fever. "She just does it all. She's in the middle of a run that sometimes I want to shake her and say, do you know how good you are? But then I don't want to shake her because I don't want to wake her up. She can just stay in whatever zone she's in."

At this point, the only drama when it comes to the WNBA MVP race is whether a player other than Wilson manages to collect a first-place vote.
