Joe Mazzulla Compares Celtics' 2025 NBA Title Chase to Animal Kingdom After 2024 Win

Joseph ZuckerSep 10, 2024

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla reached into his bag of metaphors when discussing the team's quest to repeat as NBA champions.

"The phrase 'defending a title' is a very passive-aggressive term," he said on the Locked On Celtics podcast (via RealGM). "If you look at the animal kingdom, some of the strongest animals don't defend; they're the most aggressive, and they attack the most. Whether you've won or haven't won, your mindset can't change. You have to understand what goes into winning and losing, commit to the details on a daily basis, and remain aggressive. You're not defending something; you're attacking a new goal."

Parity seems to be the name of the game in the NBA thanks in part to a punitive salary cap that reins in the league's highest spenders. A different team has won the Finals for the last six seasons.

Right now, the Celtics are arguably the favorites to once be the last one standing, though.

Kristaps Porziล†ฤฃis' offseason surgery is a concern since his recovery will force him to miss a chunk of the 2024-25 season. That shouldn't derail their repeat bid as long as he has enough time to ramp up before the playoffs.

Porziล†ฤฃis' situation aside, there aren't too many variables with Boston. All of its key players are coming back and it didn't suffer the kind of attrition further down the roster that can deplete a defending champion's depth.

Motivation shouldn't be an issue, either, particularly when it comes to stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Tatum is coming off a 2024 Summer Olympics in which his lack of minutes was a major subplot. He'll be eager to assert his status as an elite talent in the NBA with an eye toward winning Finals MVP after missing out last year.

Brown is in a similar position in that he's the reigning Finals MVP but didn't really hide his disappointment at missing out on an All-NBA team or failing to get a spot on Team USA in Paris.

Mazzulla's reference to the "animal kingdom" may have been a bit odd, but the Celtics shouldn't be lacking in hunger to claim another title.
