Updated 2025 NFL Draft Order After Sunday's Week 1 Results

Joe TanseySep 9, 2024

There is a clear idea across the NFL regarding who the worst teams in the 2024 season will be.

The Carolina Panthers and New York Giants looked the most lifeless during Sunday's Week 1 schedule, and few would be surprised if they end up battling for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

For now, the draft order does not reflect the quality of the losses suffered in Week 1 because 15 teams sit at 0-1.

By the end of September, though, we could have a clear race for the top pick between Carolina, New York and a few others.

The Carolina Panthers and New York Giants turned in the two worst performances in Week 1.

Carolina was run off the field by the New Orleans Saints by halftime in its 47-10 loss, while the Giants struggled to move the ball in their 28-6 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings.

The two teams are in different stages of team-building.

Carolina just hired head coach Dave Canales to attempt to get the best out of Bryce Young in his second year in the NFL.

The Giants appear to be on their last chance with Daniel Jones and Brian Daboll. The quarterback-head coach combination may not make it past October at this point.

Big Blue would be the more quarterback-needy franchise of the two, especially if Young displays some sort of promise over the next 17 games.

There were few signs of significant improvement from either team on Sunday, so it may be a two-team race for the top pick as the season goes on.

Defensive Prospects Could Dominate Top 5

The 2025 draft board will not take its full shape until the middle of the college and NFL seasons.

However, the early indication is that defensive players could control the top-five picks.

Colorado's wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, Michigan cornerback Will Johnson, Tennessee edge-rusher James Pearce Jr. and Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham will all contend to be the No. 1 overall pick.

Georgia's Carson Beck is the early front-runner to be the first quarterback chosen, but as we have seen in recent drafts, the QB needs of teams across the NFL could outweigh the selection of the best players available.

Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Texas' Quinn Ewers lead the list of quarterback prospects beneath Beck, but they need to be near-perfect to surge into the top-five conversation given how strong the top-tier defensive talent is in the 2025 NFL draft class.
