Dolphins' Calais Campbell Says He Was Handcuffed During Tyreek Hill Detainment

Timothy RappSep 8, 2024

Miami Dolphins defensive lineman revealed during his postgame interview on Sunday that he was also put in handcuffs when teammate Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic stop and detained earlier in the morning.

"Actually they put handcuffs on me too, and I was like, 'What is going on?'" he said. "I didn't understand what the issue was. For him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some type of way. But that just goes to show how resilient we are. We didn't let that stop us."

"I saw Tyreek getting apprehended, I just wanted to make sure everything was OK, trying to deescalate the situation." he continued. "Officer felt some kind of way, put handcuffs on me, and I had to tell myself, 'Don't let this get you down. Get focused, stay locked in and do what you prepared to do so you can go out here and win a ballgame."

Campbell also told reporters he believed the officers were using "excessive force" with Hill and their handling of the situation "was a bit extreme"

Hill's detainment is being investigated by the Miami-Dade Police Department, and one of the arresting officers has already been placed on administrative leave:

"Apparently he got a ticket for a moving violation entering the stadium," Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Jeff Darlington before Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. "How things escalated into the situation they were in—handcuffs, and being held on the ground with police—is mind-boggling to me. I'm deeply concerned by that, very troubled, we will be looking into it. We will be investigating. We will look out for Tyreek. But I'm not going to make any allegations at this time."

Hill said he didn't know why officers removed him from his vehicle and handcuffed him after being pulled over.

"No idea. It's crazy. No idea. I wasn't disrespectful because my mom didn't raise me that way," he told reporters. "Didn't cuss. Did none of that. I'm still trying to figure it out... Don't be disrespectful."

Hill added that he wants to be a police officer one day and was surprised by how Sunday's incident played out.

"All across the world, you see it," he said. "I don't want to bring race into it. But sometimes it's kind of iffy when you do. What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what those guys would have did. I was making sure I did what my uncle told me to do if you're ever in situations like that. Put your hands on the steering wheel, just listen."
