The Patriots shut out the Bengals in the opening half and also forced two turnovers. Cincinnati did have a chance to come back in the final quarter but a questionable decision to punt led to multiple strong runs from Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson to seal the game.
Bengals fans took to social media to rip the Bengals for the lackluster performance against a team coming off of a 4-13 2023 season.
Fans also expressed frustration with head coach Zac Taylor's decision-making in the contest, especially with the choice to punt the ball late.
Joe Burrow also caught significant heat, with many calling him overrated.
The Bengals start the season 0-1 and move to 1-5 in season opener's with Taylor as the head coach. It was also Burrow's first game back from the wrist injury that ended his 2023 season.
He went 21-of-29 for 164 yards but the Patriots defense limited what he and the Bengals offense could do. Cincinnati only had 224 total offensive yards and only held possession for 25:57.
The Patriots were able to ride an efficient performance from Jacoby Brissett and an elite 120-yard night from Stevenson to secure head coach Jerod Mayo's first victory.
Cincinnati will look to bounce back from the loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2.
