Vikings' J.J. McCarthy: 'A Kick in the Balls' to Miss Rookie Season with Knee Injury

Scott PolacekSep 6, 2024

The Minnesota Vikings made J.J. McCarthy the quarterback of the future when they selected him with the No. 10 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, but that future was put on hold when he suffered a season-ending meniscus tear that required surgery.

He told reporters Friday, "It's tough. A kick in the balls. But you take everything life throws at you and look at the positive."

Fortunately for McCarthy and Vikings fans, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported last month the team believes the quarterback "will come back stronger than ever" following the surgery.

Coming back stronger than ever would suggest big things are in store for McCarthy's career, as he just led Michigan to a College Football Playoff national championship last season by completing 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions while adding 202 yards and three scores on the ground.

He delivered on some of the biggest stages college football has to offer, and the Vikings surely hoped he would do the same as soon as his rookie season in the NFL.

Yet the preseason injury prevented him from walking into a fairly ideal setup for a rookie quarterback. Minnesota has no shortage of offensive weapons with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Aaron Jones, and McCarthy would have largely been tasked with playing the point guard role and distributing the ball to other playmakers.

That role now belongs to veteran journeyman Sam Darnold.

Darnold never lived up to expectations after the New York Jets selected him with the No. 3 overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft, but he will have another starting opportunity this season for the Vikings.

He has played for the Jets, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers and has a 21-35 career record as a starter.

In a perfect world for Minnesota, Darnold will be a successful one-year stopgap until McCarthy is ready to return and ideally live up to similar expectations that were also placed upon his shoulders as a top-10 pick.
