49ers Rumors: Deebo Samuel Reworks Contract, Helps Cap After Williams, Aiyuk Deals

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Deebo Samuel agreed to a restructured contract on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

Per Yates, the move creates $16.4 million in cap space for the 49ers.

The restructure gives San Francisco some cap relief after the team reworked the contract of All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams by handing him a three-year, $82.6 million deal earlier in the day.

The 49ers also extended wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on Thursday, giving him a four-year contract worth $120 million.

Samuel initially carried a $28.6 million cap hit for the 2024 season, but the 49ers lowered it to $12.2 million by converting most of his $21 million base salary to a signing bonus (via David Lombardi of The Athletic).

He wasn't the only member of San Francisco's roster to agree to a contract restructure on Tuesday, as defensive tackle Maliek Collins reworked his deal with the team to create $5.432 million in cap flexibility, per Yates.

Samuel is entering his sixth season with the organization and is looking to build upon a promising 2023 campaign. He racked up 60 catches for 892 yards as well as 37 carries for 225 rush yards, recording over 250 more yards from scrimmage compared to his 2022 season.

The 28-year-old could be in line for another Pro Bowl appearance, as he impressed San Francisco's coaching staff throughout training camp.

"The first day I saw him, when he came back, I almost didn't recognize him," defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen said, per Josh Dubow of the Associated Press. "I was like, 'Dang, dude you're in really good shape.' That's not a knock. He looks great and he's moving great. He's Deebo. He's a weapon anyway but he's been looking really good."

With his contract restructured, Samuel will continue to prepare for the 49ers' Week 1 contest against the New York Jets on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET.
