Brian Daboll Will Call Plays for Daniel Jones, Giants Offense During 2024 NFL Season

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed to reporters Tuesday that he will be calling offensive plays this season.

Jordan Raanan of ESPN relayed the information.

Daboll served as the Buffalo Bills' offensive coordinator from 2018-2021 before becoming the Giants' head coach in 2022. He also served as OC for the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs in past NFL stops.

The Giants' offensive coordinator remains Mike Kafka, who joined the team after working as the Chiefs' quarterbacks coach. Kafka called plays in 2022, but there was much speculation last year about who was calling the shots.

"It was speculated that Daboll took over those duties from offensive coordinator Mike Kafka last season, though it was never confirmed and Kafka remains on the staff in the same position," Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported Tuesday.

The Giants are coming off a disappointing 6-11 season that saw the team score the third-fewest points (15.6 PPG) in the NFL.

Kevin Patra of NFL.com provided more context on the matter.

"Daboll said in March that he was considering taking over play-calling duties after offensive coordinator Mike Kafka ran the show the first two years in New York.

"Things trended toward Daboll officially taking over the duties most of the offseason. Receiver Darius Slayton noted in July that the head coach had taken on a larger role in the offensive meetings this offseason. Daboll returned to play-calling role during the preseason."

Kafka may no longer be the play-caller, but his status with the team is still solid. He's still offensive coordinator but got a new title, assistant head coach, back in February.

Regardless of who is calling the shots, the Giants have some serious work to do on the offensive end. Big Blue hasn't finished higher than 15th in the NFL in scoring since the 2015 season. They are led by a quarterback in Daniel Jones who excelled in 2022 but struggled mightily in 2023 before suffering a season-ending torn ACL.

The pieces are in place for offensive improvement thanks to a retooled offensive line and a new star wideout in rookie Malik Nabers, the sixth overall pick in the NFL draft.

But we'll soon find out how the new-look offense comes together when the Giants host the Minnesota Vikings to begin the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
