C.J. Stroud, Stefon Diggs Among Texans' Captains for 2024 NFL Season

C.J. Stroud and Stefon Diggs are among seven players voted as team captains for the Houston Texans entering the 2024 NFL season.

The Texans announced their captains on Tuesday, with Will Anderson Jr., Laremy Tunsil, Jimmie Ward, Azeez Al-Shaair and Jon Weeks joining Stroud and Diggs as the players who will have the "C" on their jersey.

Diggs has been a lightning rod for all sorts of discussion and speculation throughout his career, but especially since the Texans acquired him in an offseason trade with the Buffalo Bills.

The Athletic's Tim Graham wrote in April that the Bills eventually grew tired of a series of "micro-aggressions" and "passive-aggressive comments" from Diggs when they decided to deal him to Houston.

For all of the concerns the Bills had, Diggs always seemed to be respected by his teammates. He was voted a team captain in three of his four seasons with the club.

When the Bills voted him a captain going into last season, Diggs told reporters how it meant more than it had in any previous year:

"For me, it means more now than it did when I was, my first time ever being named a captain. Just the consistency of it, the respect from your peers. I know the biggest thing for me is always earning the respect from my teammates, earning the respect from my coaches, and when you get named a captain, that's like reassurance, like, you might be halfway decent at what you do, you know what I'm saying? Not just professionally, but as far as like how you represent yourself and who you are as a man."

It seems like Diggs has had no problem ingratiating himself to his new teammates in Houston.

Stroud, Tunsil, Ward and Anderson are repeat captains from 2023. Stroud and Anderson were the two youngest players on the Texans' roster last season when they received the honor.

Weeks has spent his entire NFL career with the Texans since being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010. The veteran long snapper has played in 227 consecutive games since entering the league.

Al-Shaair signed with the Texans as a free agent in March after spending last season with the Tennessee Titans. He played the first four years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers from 2019 to '22 when DeMeco Ryans worked on head coach Kyle Shanahan's staff.

The Texans will open the 2024 regular season on Sunday against their AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.
