Bengals' Joe Burrow Added Muscle to Help Avoid Injuries: 'Figured I'd Give It a Shot'

Andrew PetersSep 2, 2024

After a wrist injury limited him to just 10 games during the 2023 season, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow decided to add some muscle over the offseason in an attempt to avoid injuries.

"I wanted to get bigger, try something new," Burrow said, per Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. "I hadn't been healthy for a couple years. I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm feeling pretty good right now, so I'm going to keep that the way it is right now. If my legs start to feel heavy, I might lose a couple pounds."

According to Breer, Burrow worked around his offseason wrist surgery to get stronger and put on muscle mass. In an interview on Pardon My Take in July, Burrow revealed he had put on about "10 to 15 pounds" of muscle mass and feels "120 percent stronger."

Injuries have taken a toll on Burrow throughout his career. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft suffered a torn ACL in November of his rookie year, limiting him to just 10 games. He dealt with a calf strain going into last season before ultimately having his year ended early due to a ligament tear in his wrist.

Given his injury history, it makes sense why Burrow would want to figure out a way to get healthy and stay healthy.

A healthy Burrow has proved to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he'll look to be the best version of himself this season.
