Russell Wilson Rumors: NFL Rivals Concerned Steelers QB 'Is Too Far Past His Prime'

Rival teams feel that Russell Wilson's age may be an issue for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2024 season, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

Per Howe, opposing organizations are concerned that Wilson is "too far past his prime to be a difference-maker" for the Steelers' offense.

After averaging the eighth-fewest passing yards per game in 2023, Pittsburgh completely overhauled its quarterback room in the offseason. Former starter Kenny Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, while backup Mitch Trubisky was cut. Reserve passer Mason Rudolph also left in free agency.

The Steelers added Wilson after he was released by the Denver Broncos before acquiring Justin Fields in a deal with the Chicago Bears.

The nine-time Pro Bowl passer wrapped up an impressive 2023 campaign, completing 66.4 percent of his throws for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions.

It's fair to wonder if he'll continue to operate at the same level with Pittsburgh, as he'll be 36 years old by the end of the regular season. Wilson also has a tendency to linger in the pocket and take sacks, as he was brought down 90 times over the past two seasons. In two preseason appearances with the Steelers, he was sacked three times.

Still, Pittsburgh should be able to stay in the AFC playoff picture with a defense that features stars such as T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Meanwhile, the Steelers' ceiling in 2024 will be determined by the veteran quarterback's effectiveness under center.
