Cowboys' Dak Prescott: Contract Status Entering Week 1 Will Show How Some People Feel

As Week 1 approaches, Dak Prescott still doesn't have a new contract.

The Dallas Cowboys star quarterback said he doesn't necessarily need an extension before the start of the season, but he said he thinks "it says a lot if it is or if it isn't," per The Athletic's Jon Machota.

While Prescott didn't explain which people he was talking about, it can be assumed that one would be Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

"I stopped, honestly, listening to things (Jerry Jones) says to the media a long time ago," Prescott said in later remarks, per Machota. "It doesn't really hold weight with me."

Prescott and Dallas have been in contract talks all offseason, though star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb's extension was the No. 1 priority for most of the summer.

Now that Lamb has secured a massive extension, Prescott seems to be next in line, but Jones said the Cowboys' main focus will be preparing for the season ahead while keeping contract negotiations on the back burner.

"That hasn't changed," Jones said, per DallasCowboys.com's Patrik Walker. "We're continuing to, first of all, all of us focus on the next 10 days to two weeks: the opening game. That's taking priority over [everything]. Lamb wasn't here. Dak is here.

"So, really, we have no more to do in those significant things that we talk about every time we meet to have this season on go mode and engaged, so it'll remain like it's been."

Prescott is set to play on the final year of his four-year, $160 million contract and will earn $29 million this season before becoming a free agent. He's coming off an MVP-caliber season that saw him throw for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns.
