Vince McMahon WWE Documentary 'Mr. McMahon' Given Netflix Release Date
A docuseries on the career of former WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon is officially set to release next month.
Netflix announced Thursday that the six-part series entitled Mr. McMahon will drop on the platform beginning Sept. 25.
The series is directed and produced by Chris Smith, who was responsible for the hugely successful Tiger King docuseries in 2020. Also, The Ringer's Bill Simmons, who created the popular ESPN 30 for 30 series, is the executive producer.
In a press release from Netflix, the streaming giant noted that Mr. McMahon "chronicles the rise and fall" of McMahon, showing viewers everything from McMahon making WWE a global sports entertainment powerhouse to his resignation from the company amid sexual assault and misconduct allegations.
Smith provided some insight into what he hoped to accomplish with the Mr. McMahon series, saying:
"The goal behind 'Mr. McMahon' was to pull back the curtain and reveal the true Vince McMahon, obscured beneath the persona he presented to the world. Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations. The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind."
McMahon purchased WWE from his father in 1982, but rather than carrying on the tradition of a pro wrestling landscape predicated on distinct territories, he sought to take WWE national and even international.
The creation and success of WrestleMania in 1985 played a big role in McMahon being able to follow through on his plan, and it helped WWE become unquestionably the biggest and most popular pro wrestling promotion of all time.
McMahon was the clear head honcho in WWE for four decades, but everything changed in 2022 when he stepped down from WWE after an investigation determined he paid multiple women millions of dollars in hush money to remain silent about sexual relationships they had with him and sexual conduct he allegedly engaged.
Just six months later, McMahon returned to WWE as chairman, but he resigned again in January 2024 after former WWE employee Janel Grant filed a lawsuit in which she alleged that McMahon and others in the company sexually trafficked and assaulted her.
McMahon has been out of the spotlight since his departure from WWE, but the company has soared in popularity under the ownership of TKO and the leadership of McMahon's son-in-law, Triple H, who is the new head of creative in place of McMahon.
