Jacoby Brissett-Drake Maye QB1 Battle Winner to Be Announced by Patriots on Thursday

The New England Patriots have made a decision on whether veteran Jacoby Brissett or rookie Drake Maye will begin the season as the team's starting quarterback, but head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters that he won't reveal who that is until after he speaks with the team Thursday.

Dakota Randall of Pro Football Network relayed Mayo's remarks.

Mayo also added these remarks, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

"I think it's important to remember what's good for the team today may not be good for the team weeks down the line. The challenge is, you want to win every single game now, but also we're trying to build something special here."

The Patriots selected Maye, the former UNC star, with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Brissett is entering his ninth NFL season. This is his second time around with the Pats, who initially selected him with a third-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

We'll certainly find out soon enough whether Maye or Brissett gets the call Week 1, but speculation seems to point toward the rookie getting the nod.

But there's also news and quotes suggesting that Maye sits to start.

So it's not entirely clear what the Pats will do right now, but the answer will be known soon enough. Either way, New England opens the season on the road on Sunday, Sept. 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
