College Football Rankings 2024: Predictions for Week 1 NCAA Standings

Joe TanseyAug 26, 2024

The preseason college football rankings have already been torn up before a majority of teams take the field.

The 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles lost their opening game in Ireland to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

FSU's loss guarantees it will fall out of the top 10 when the next rankings come out after Week 1's games, even if the Noles rebound to beat the Boston College Eagles.

More shakeups will happen throughout the Top 25 after Week 1 because there are three Top 25 battles taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

The top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs will be tested immediately by the Clemson Tigers, while the Notre Dame Fighting Irish's top 10 status will be tested on the road against the Texas A&M Aggies.

Week 1 possesses three rankings-changing matchups.

Georgia's battle with No. 14 Clemson in Atlanta kicks off Saturday's slate.

The Bulldogs are a two-touchdown favorite and playing what is essentially a home game inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

UGA is expected to win and keep its top ranking for at least a few more weeks. The Texas Longhorns are the only top-five team with a ranked foe on their schedule before Georgia meets the Alabama Crimson Tide on September 28.

There is a chance Georgia could have two Top 25 wins before most of the national title contenders have one.

Notre Dame can make a statement as the No. 7 team with a road win in College Station. That may be more significant than UGA's win over Clemson because of where the game takes place.

Notre Dame's schedule already looked weak because of the down year the ACC is expected to have and it got worse with FSU's loss to Georgia Tech.

A road win over a ranked foe could go a long way when we discuss the Irish's College Football Playoff resume.

USC and LSU meet on Sunday in a game that both teams could use a win in to start difficult seasons on the front foot.

A USC win could catapult the Trojans close to the top 15 in the Week 2 rankings because of the easy games the rest of the ranked teams have.

A win for LSU would solidify its spot as a top 15 team and give it a chance to make an early push toward the top 10, especially if Notre Dame and Florida State fell from the top 10.

Florida State will drop spots in the updated rankings after Week 1.

But how far the Noles drop from No. 10 will be determined by a few factors.

Mike Norvell's team needs to beat the Boston College Eagles in convincing fashion at home on Monday in a national television window to prove the Week 0 loss was a fluke and nothing else.

A strong victory on Monday combined with losses by LSU and Clemson could soften the blow of where the Noles fall in the updated Top 25.

They are guaranteed to be one of a few teams with one loss, but the single defeat may mean more for the Noles' CFB Playoff hopes.

They are not in danger of missing out on the 12-team field yet, but they do have a smaller margin of error with Clemson, Miami and Notre Dame still on the schedule.
