Jets' Saleh: Aaron Rodgers Has 'More Experience in Coaching Than Most of the Coaches'

Zach BacharAug 25, 2024

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is open to receiving Aaron Rodgers' input as the 2024 season approaches, using the four-time MVP's 19 years of NFL experience as a reason why.

"I mean, he's one of the greatest ever," Saleh said, per Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle. "And he's 40. I mean, he's got more experience in coaching than most of the coaches on our staff. It would be silly not to ask him a question or two, you know?"

While Rodgers is known for his exploits on the field compared to coaching, he did spend lots of time on the sidelines with Saleh in 2023 after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1.

Saleh also rejected the premise that Rodgers' influence on the coaching staff's decision-making is negative.

"No, because any organization that has a [future] Hall of Fame quarterback is gonna defer to him and to make sure that things are in a way that he needs it to be so he can perform his best," Saleh said, via Silver. "What I will say is that Aaron does a phenomenal job communicating, and making sure that we're all on the same page in both directions; there's a give and take."

"But, yeah, it would behoove us to ask him where he is mentally and how he sees things," he added.

Rodgers and New York's coaching staff will look to be on the same page in 2024, as expectations are growing for a team attempting to end the league's longest active playoff drought.

The 10-time Pro Bowl passer doesn't appear to be hampered by his Achilles injury, as Saleh told reporters on Aug. 3 that Rodgers "looks like he never missed any time" in training camp.

With New York's preseason action coming to an end on Saturday night, the Jets will attempt to get off to a strong start during their regular-season debut against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 9.
