Video: Shannon Sharpe Tells John Cena Kendrick Lamar Beat Drake in Viral Rap Beef

Joseph ZuckerAug 25, 2024

NFL legend Shannon Sharpe chose a victor in the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, which reached a boiling point this summer.

Speaking with WWE star John Cena on his Club Shay Shay podcast, Sharpe said Lamar was the clear winner thanks to the widespread popularity of "Not Like Us." The retired tight argued the single is going to be a staple at sporting events going forward.

Celebrities and fans alike felt compelled to pick sides when Lamar and Drake exchanged verbal barbs. The general discord between the two rappers goes back years, but things got particularly personal when they took turns releasing their own diss tracks months ago.

Many will share Sharpe's opinion that "Not Like Us" amounted to a knockout blow. Beyond the cutting content of the single, the song became a commercial hit and broke through into the sports world.

"'Not Like Us' works at every level," said Lanier "DJ Severe" Stewart, the Los Angeles Dodgers' music director, in an interview with Andscape's Keith Murphy. "Sports are very competitive. People like to talk crap to the opposing side. Everybody is going to take hold of that 'they not like us, they not like us' chorus. It's a very direct song. It's basically declaring to the other team, 'You ain't on my level.'"

Over time, the intent behind "Not Like Us" will likely be lost to history, but it's bound to remain a rallying cry for athletes and teams for a long time to come.
