NFL's Russell Wilson on Critics: 'Never Been Worried About What Other People Think'

Russell Wilson isn't motivated by criticism.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback revealed that doubt doesn't fuel him when speaking to reporters on Thursday.

"I never had it to keep me going," Wilson said, via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "I've never been — I don't know why — I've just never been worried about what other people think. I think ultimately I focus on, as I mentioned to you guys — obviously my faith means everything to me."

The 35-year-old is entering his first season with the Steelers after signing a one-year deal to join the organization in March.

Wilson was released by the Denver Broncos two years after signing a five-year, $245 million contract in 2022. He compiled a record of just 11-19 as a starter in Denver, missing the playoffs in both of his seasons with the team.

His individual production improved in 2023, recording 3,070 passing yards and 26 touchdowns compared to just eight interceptions.

Wilson is still facing some doubts with Pittsburgh, as he's currently in the midst of a battle with Justin Fields for the starting quarterback job. The veteran signal-caller completed eight of his 10 pass attempts for 47 yards in his lone preseason appearance, although he was sacked three times. It's also worth noting that he's been dealing with a calf injury throughout training camp.

Wilson confirmed to ESPN's Brooke Pryor on Wednesday that he'll be playing during the Steelers' final preseason matchup with the Detroit Lions as he attempts to secure the first-string role. Kickoff is on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
