DeSean Jackson: Trent Williams Will Return to 49ers 'Shortly' amid Contract Rumors

Timothy RappAug 21, 2024

DeSean Jackson appeared on FS1's Speak on Tuesday and said that he recently spoke with Trent Williams and expects the star offensive lineman's holdout to end in the near future.

"They're working on something, man," he said of talks between the San Francisco 49ers and Williams. "I think [the 49ers] are going to make it right for my boy to come in there, man. He might be showing up a little late. He's got some fines and some fees he might have to take care of, but he's going to be there, man. So 49ers fans, it's gong to be all right. So y'all take it easy, but honestly, he'll be there shortly."

It was a more promising potential update than the one head coach Kyle Shanahan offered during his Tuesday press conference.

"Zero updates," Shanahan told reporters regarding the contract situations of both Williams and wideout Brandon Aiyuk, who has been a hold-in during training camp. "Nothing's changed."

As has been widely reported, the Aiyuk situation has been whittled down to two scenarios: The Niners and the star wideout will agree on a contract extension, or Aiyuk will be traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he'll sign an extension with his new team.

Whereas Aiyuk is entering the final year on his rookie deal, however, Williams still has three years left on his deal and is ostensibly seeking a restructured deal that would offer him more immediate guaranteed money. He also has been a complete holdout, remaining away from training camp while racking up $50,000 in fines per missed practice.

The two sides have remained in communication, however.

"Trent's been away from us, but the communication has been good there," Lynch told Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher on KNBR's Murph and Markus show last week (h/t Joaquin Ruiz of NBC Sports Bay Area). "Hopefully, we can work through things and get Trent back here. We're working hard on that. I know he wants to [get back here] and I know we want that."

According to Jackson, a resolution should be imminent.
