Hideki Matsuyama Wins 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship; Golf Fans Hype Clutch Finish
Hideki Matsuyama has his second win of the season and has won the first PGA playoff event of the year.
The golfer won the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday, carding a 17-under par to defeat Xander Schauffele, Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler.
Matsuyama led by five strokes with seven holes to go, but quickly lost that lead over a four-hole stretch. He managed to regroup heading down the stretch, carding a pair of birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to regain the lead and win by two strokes.
After Matsuyama's win fans praised the huge turnaround after giving up the lead.
Matsuyama, who won the Genesis Invitational back in February, had not had a top-10 finish since June and finished outside of the top 50 in his last two events, but the win now gives him plenty of momentum as the playoffs continue.
Outside of PGA Tour action, Matsuyama also took home the bronze medal in the men's individual golf tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing behind Scheffler, who won gold, and Tommy Fleetwood, who took home silver.
Next week, Matsuyama and 50 other golfers will head to the BMW Championship in Denver, where he will look to use his momentum to continue climbing in the playoff standings.
