Video: Patrick Mahomes Completes Behind-the-Back Pass to Travis Kelce, Stuns NFL Fans
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is at it again.
In the first quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions, Mahomes dropped back and hit tight end Travis Kelce with a behind-the-back pass on a delayed screen up the middle:

Mahomes later said during the NFL Network broadcast of Saturday's game that he threw the behind-the-back pass "out of spite" because Kelce ran the wrong route:
Kelce's brother, retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, was stunned by the completion, as were NFL fans watching across the country.
This is the second preseason appearance of the summer for Mahomes, who went 3-of-4 for 27 yards while helping lead the Chiefs to a field goal against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week.
Mahomes has practiced the behind-the-back pass at previous Chiefs training camps, and even broke out the move during practice in June on a toss to rookie running back Carson Steele.
Mahomes said in May on Fox Sports' "First Things First" that head coach Andy Reid wanted him to attempt the pass during a game, and that Reid "deliberately puts in plays" during which Mahomes would be able to pull off the trick.
"I think it was, we didn't play as well offensively enough for me to pull the behind-the-back pass off, this last year," Mahomes said in May. "But it's no one else's fault than myself... It's me not having that confidence to do it in the game. But one of these games, man, we've got to do it. There's been too much hype on it."
Mahomes added: "Hopefully it's to Trav, because I feel like he's the best at judging that behind-the-back pass."
The Chiefs quarterback apparently felt confident enough to pull the trick off with Kelce as his team's starters faced off against the Lions' second defense unit.
Fans are now challenging Mahomes to pull off the move in a regular-season NFL game.
Mahomes sat out the final preseason game for the Chiefs in 2023, but Reid has yet to confirm whether the star quarterback will be taking the field again when preseason action continues on Thursday against the Chicago Bears.
