Steve Kerr: USA Fans Would've Been 'Ashamed' If We Won Olympic Silver Medal
Team USA men's basketball head coach Steve Kerr said that American fans would have been "ashamed" of the team if it came home with a silver medal at the Summer Olympics.
Kerr made the remarks on NBC after Team USA beat France 98-87 to win the gold in Paris on Saturday.
"We have the most incredible group of players," Kerr said. "They were all so unselfish throughout this whole thing, through all the noise, all the pressure. I think we might be the only team in the world whose fans are ashamed of them if they get a silver medal. That's the pressure we face. But our players, and you saw Steph, they love the pressure. They appreciated this atmosphere, and they were fantastic."
France cut the American lead to 82-79 in the fourth quarter, but Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry was too tough down the stretch, hitting four three-pointers in the final three minutes en route to a team-high 24 points.
Team USA rolled into the Olympics having won four straight gold medals in men's hoops. Given the proliferation of world-class talent on the squad, the team entered Paris as the heavy gold medal favorite. That was inevitable with the likes of Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant on the roster alongside a host of other great players.
Although there were some struggles, the Americans went 5-0 on an exhibition tour going into Paris. Team USA went 3-0 in group play, outscoring its opponents by 64 points. The Americans then crushed Brazil 122-87 in the quarterfinal round.
However, the Americans needed a miraculous comeback against Serbia in the quarterfinals to survive, overcoming a 13-point deficit to start the fourth quarter en route to a 95-91 win.
The United States was in control for much of the gold medal game but dealt with some nervy moments in the fourth. However, Curry was simply too good down the stretch in his first-ever Olympics appearance, leading the team to gold once again.
Ultimately, Kerr is likely right, in that Team USA fans would have been bitterly disappointed with anything but gold. That won't be an issue, though, with the Americans capping a 6-0 Olympics and taking home the top honors once again.
