China's victory marks the first time a non-European country has ever won gold in the women's rhythmic gymnastics group all-around at the Olympics.
Even though the Chinese team only had the fourth-highest artistry score (8.100) with the five hoops, they were able to make up for it by having the highest difficulty score (22.100). Ukraine was the only other country with a difficult score greater than 21.0 in the final (21.500).
China had the third-best score in the second leg with three ribbons and two balls, but defending gold-medalist Bulgaria was the only team with a higher artistry score (8.35 to 8.25). The early cushion from the first leg was more than enough to keep the Chinese out in front.
Israel's silver medal marked the first time the country has finished on the podium in the team event since it was added the Olympic rotation in 1996. Its previous best finish was sixth done three times, most recently at the Tokyo Games.
The second leg was where the Israel team shined. They posted the second-highest score, receiving a 33.250 that was buoyed by having the highest difficulty score (18.800). They were docked 0.05 points in execution, but it didn't come back to hurt them in the overall standings.
Italy, which finished second in qualifying, took home the bronze. There was an inquiry for their first routine after the score came in at 36.100, but the judges didn't make a change. They were able to hold off Bulgaria to stay in the third spot.
It was a disappointing final for the Bulgarians. They had the best overall score in qualifying, but a 34.100 score in the first leg of the final put them in seventh place. They did rebound with the top score in the second leg (33.700), but they finished .300 behind Italy.
This marks the first time since 2012 that Bulgaria failed to medal at the Olympics. The Italians earned their second consecutive bronze and fourth Olympic medal overall in this event.
