NBA Rumors: Jonathan Kuminga Seeking 'Full Max' Warriors Contract Extension

Jack MurrayAug 9, 2024

Jonathan Kuminga is looking to cash in on his next contract.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported on the No Cap Room podcast that the Golden State Warriors forward is seeking a "full max" contract extension (h/t HoopsHype):

"Jonathan Kuminga is entering the final year of his rookie deal where the word around the league from various sources is that Kuminga and his representation are looking for a full max extension, which as we just talked about with Brandon Ingram and Jamal Murray and whoever, like if you're not an absolute All-Star, Scottie Barnes type of guy for Toronto, Lauri Markkanen for Utah you know, Trae Young for Atlanta back in the day, because look at what happened to Trae Young and Atlanta since then, it's really hard to get that number."

The 21-year-old is entering his fourth NBA season and is expected to secure a larger role after the departure of Klay Thompson. Last season, Kuminga averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists across 74 games—all career highs.

After starting 46 games a season ago, he'll likely filter into a more solidified starting role following Thompson's departure for the Dallas Mavericks.

That could make him a breakout candidate, and Golden State hopes that comes to fruition. The Warriors went 46-36 in 2023-24 and fell in the play-in tournament—the third time in five seasons that the Warriors have failed to reach the playoffs.

Although Kuminga's name surfaced in trade rumors linking the Warriors to Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, ESPN's Kendra Andrews reported this week that Golden State plans to hold on to Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski "very tightly."

Andrews added the Warriors would need an "overwhelming offer" to move either player.
