Olympic Soccer Bracket 2024: Morocco Beats Egypt to Win Men's Bronze Medal

Timothy RappAug 8, 2024

Few teams have made a bigger mark on the men's football tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics than Morocco, which upset Argentina in the group stage, smashed the United States in the quarterfinals and lost in dramatic fashion to Spain in the semis.

So it was only fitting that the Moroccans would go out with a bang in the bronze medal match, earning their first-ever medal in the men's competition.

Morocco obliterated an overmatched Egypt, 6-0, in a scoreline more befitting of a college football game involving Iowa than an international soccer match.

Half of Morocco's roster found the back of the net.

First, it was Abde Ezzalzouli in the 23rd minute. Soufiane Rahimi scored the first of his two goals three minutes later. Bilal El Khannouss opened the scoring in the second half just six minutes in. Akram Nakach made it five in the 73rd minute.

And Achraf Hakimi made it a touchdown with an absolute stunner in the 87th minute, capping off the dominating effort.

That meant Morocco finished their Olympic tournament with 17 goals in six matches, an average of just under three goals per game. Rahimi had eight of them by himself, twice as many as anybody else, with Spain's Fermín López and France's Jean-Philippe Mateta tied for second with four goals.

If nothing else, the Moroccans were the most entertaining team in Paris.

The gold medal will be decided between Spain and the host nation of France. It's hard to argue that any team was more memorable in the men's tournament than Morocco, however.
