Warriors Rumors: Lauri Markkanen Trade Was Seen as 'Bad Deal' amid Jazz's Demands

Doric SamAug 9, 2024

The Golden State Warriors' failed pursuit of a trade for Utah Jazz star forward Lauri Markkanen could actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Per ESPN's Kendra Andrews, sources said that the Warriors didn't "want to be involved in any 'bad deals'" that would force them to give up pieces they were unsure of letting go of in exchange for a player they wanted. In negotiations with Utah, sources added that "what the Jazz were asking for in return for Markkanen fell under the 'bad deal' category, and the talks stalled."

Andrews noted that the negotiations between the Warriors and the Jazz "diminished" after Utah asked for second-year guard and All-Rookie first-team selection Brandin Podziemski to be included in the deal along with multiple draft picks. Golden State is reportedly "holding high value" in its young pieces like Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga, and it will take an "overwhelming offer" to convince the franchise to let them go.

While Markkanen was one of the most coveted trade candidates this offseason, all signs point toward him signing a massive contract extension with the Jazz in the coming days. By signing the deal on Wednesday or later, the 27-year-old will not be eligible to be traded until next offseason.

The Warriors were hoping to add talent alongside stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in the wake of losing longtime shooting guard Klay Thompson, who signed with the Dallas Mavericks. However, Shams Charania, Tony Jones and Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported that the Warriors losing out on Markkanen "doesn't mean an immediate panic." They're now "expected to explore smaller-scale deals."

Andrews echoed those sentiments, noting that the Warriors appear to be "content with how the roster is built" and there are no players who are "reasonably available" that they are "hot on."

The Warriors are coming off a disappointing end to the 2023-24 season that saw them fall in the play-in tournament, so Curry and company will be motivated to re-establish themselves as playoff contenders this year.
