Thomas used a burst of speed off the turn to cruise in front of her competition and received no threats from 100-meter champ Julien Alfred in the lane directly next to her.

The 27-year-old let out a ton of emotion as she crossed the finish line and added her name to the list of American sprinting legends.

Thomas, who also won bronze in Tokyo in the 200 meters, became the first American woman to win the event since Allyson Felix in 2012.

The 200 meters has been dominated by the Jamaicans in recent years. The Caribbean nation won four of the last five Olympic golds in the race.

Alfred came up one place short of completing the sprint double, but she still put in a respectable race to take second place for St. Lucia.

Brittany Brown made the race extra special for Team USA by bringing home the bronze medal. Brown won the final spot on the medal stand by two-hundredths of a second over Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith.

The one-three finish was the second for Team USA on the Stade de France track on Tuesday. It also happened in the men's 1,500 meters.
