While the United States wasn't able to defend its gold medal from the Tokyo Games, the team still bounced back from a slow start in 2024. The U.S. opened pool play with a disappointing 0-3 record before stringing together five consecutive victories in order to avoid potential elimination.
Van Lith finished with a game-high six points against Canada, shooting 5-6 on one-point attempts. She also added two rebounds in just over six minutes of action.
Hamby racked up six rebounds while scoring three points of her own, hitting 66.7 percent of her one-point attempts despite missing all three of her long-range shots. Burdick also finished with three points, shooting 2-4 on free throws.
The win was far from easy, as Canada held a 12-9 lead with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. However, Team USA would only allow one point for the remainder of the contest before Burdick's free throws helped seal the victory.
After Germany finished with the No. 1 seed following pool play, the team defeated Spain in the gold medal contest by the final score of 17-16.
Spain jumped out to an early 10-6 lead and maintained a two-point advantage with less than two minutes remaining in the game. However, the team eventually relinquished the lead due to a two-point shot from Sonja Greinacher.
It was a balanced scoring effort from Germany, as all four players recorded at least four points in the gold medal game. The team was efficient from behind the arc, shooting 3-6 on two-pointers.
Spain settled for a silver medal, while the United States already secured bronze.
