NFL Rumors: Seahawks' Geno Smith to Undergo Testing amid Hip, Knee Injuries

Zach BacharAug 2, 2024

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith will undergo testing after missing two straight practices due to hip and knee issues, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson.

"He's working through a couple things from the other day," Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said, per Henderson. "But we'll get some imaging tonight, and we'll see."

As Smith remains out, backups Sam Howell and P.J. Walker should continue to spend time with the first-string offense until the veteran is able to return.

The extent of Smith's injuries should be clearer after the testing is completed, although Macdonald explained that he just "got banged up a little bit" on Tuesday (via Henderson). However, he didn't appear optimistic about the quarterback returning to practice on Friday.

"I don't know about tomorrow, but we'll see what comes out of when he goes and sees the doc," Macdonald said.

While Smith dealt with injuries earlier in his career, he's remained relatively healthy as of late. Over the past two seasons, he's started 32 of a possible 34 regular-season contests. While his individual production regressed a bit in 2023, Smith still completed 64.7 percent of his throws for 3,624 yards and 20 touchdowns against nine interceptions.

He appeared to be off to a strong start in training camp, impressing Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon.

"The way he's been playing lately is just out of his mind," Witherspoon said in regards to Smith, per Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic. "All the throws, all the keys, checks he's making, he's very on point right now, and [we're] kind of making it hard for him, but he's really making it hard for us as well."

Smith's status moving forward should become clearer as the Seahawks approach their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Aug. 10.
