Report: Tom Cruise to Perform 'Epic Stunt' to Close 2024 Paris Summer Olympics

Adam WellsAug 1, 2024

Tom Cruise's appearance at the 2024 Olympics isn't entirely about his desire to watch the world's greatest athletes compete on the biggest stage.

Per TMZ Sports, the Hollywood icon is preparing an "epic stunt" for the closing ceremony in Paris that will pass the Olympic flag to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games.

The stunt reportedly involves Cruise rappelling down from the Stade de France and landing on the stadium field carrying the flag.

This will lead to the NBC television broadcast cutting to a pre-recorded segment that begins with Cruise and the flag on an airplane from Paris to Los Angeles with him skydiving down to the landmark Hollywood sign.

TMZ noted the stunt involving the Hollywood sign was filmed in March. There were images from the shoot posted online.

According to TMZ, Cruise will pass the flag to other Olympic athletes making their way around Los Angeles. Names of the athletes aren't available, but it's believed to include a cyclist, skateboarder and volleyball player.

TMZ did note the logistics of the stunt are still being worked out and Cruise might have to use a stunt double for the rappelling portion, but he has been the "driving force" pushing this and approached the International Olympic Committee about the idea.

Considering the absurd stunts that Cruise—who turned 62 on July 3—has insisted on doing himself throughout his career, it would be a disappointment if he had to bring in a stunt double for the Olympics.

This is a man who posted a video of himself calmly talking to a camera after jumping out of a plane as part of a stunt for a Mission: Impossible sequel.

We will find out if Cruise is able to go through with his Olympic-themed stunt it during the closing ceremony for the Paris Games on Aug. 11.
