Julius Randle Rumors: 'No Indication' Knicks 'Want to Trade' Star amid Contract Buzz

The New York Knicks haven't signed Julius Randle to a long-term extension, but they reportedly have no plans to trade him, either.

Fred Katz of The Athletic reported there is "no indication" the Knicks would be willing to trade Randle, who can be a free agent after the 2024-25 season.

Randle holds a $30.9 million player option for 2025-26 that he's almost certain to decline, barring injury. The Knicks could ink Randle to an extension worth up to $181.5 million over four years, but it does not appear the two sides are close to an agreement.

Randle's long-term future with the Knicks has been cause for rampant speculation since the team reached the second round of the playoffs without their All-Star forward. His future became even murkier after New York acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, giving the Knicks six starters for five spots.

It's likely Josh Hart will move to the bench full-time after starting 42 games last season, but it's still fair to wonder where Randle fits.

Jalen Brunson's decision to sign a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension last month could open up the possibility of Randle staying long-term. Brunson gave up $11-13 million per season over what he could have landed from 2025-26 to 2027-28 by agreeing to the extension now. That could free up enough money for the Knicks to retain Randle and avoid the prohibitive second apron.

Brunson's decision to sacrifice in the name of winning also could set a precedent. If the Knicks' best player is willing to take less, Randle and others on the roster should be willing to fall in line. If Randle wants to maximize his earnings, the Knicks may have to explore trading him after all.
