NFL Rumors: Giants Want Daniel Jones as QB1 to See If 'They Need to Move on in 2025'

Zach BacharJul 29, 2024

Daniel Jones will return as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants in 2024, although that may not be the case in 2025.

According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, the Giants want to give Jones a full season under center and see how he performs before determining "whether they need to move on in 2025."

The 27-year-old signed a four-year, $160 million contract with New York in March 2023. However, the deal includes no guaranteed money beyond the 2024 season and could allow the Giants to move on from him if he doesn't meet expectations.

If he sustains an injury, that may not be the case. If Jones can't pass a physical in March 2025, the Giants would still owe him $23 million (h/t Graziano). The team could eventually choose to bench him in order to prevent an injury, although that doesn't appear to be New York's current plan.

Jones was limited to just six starts in 2023 due to a season-ending torn ACL. He struggled before his injury, leading the Giants to a mere 1-5 record while completing 67.5 percent of his throws for 909 yards and two touchdowns against six interceptions.

If New York is unable to get off to a strong start in 2024, the front office may be open to potentially making a change under center. The Giants signed Drew Lock on a one-year deal in free agency, with the 27-year-old having 23 career starts under his belt.

For now, Jones will attempt to bring the team back to the playoffs for the second time in three years.
